CHICAGO (Aug. 7)—Following the Illinois Legislative Board’s work just got faster and easier with the rollout of the union’s page on Facebook.

The globally popular social network can be accessed by any Facebook member at http://www.facebook.com/#!/UnitedTransportationUnionIllinoisLegislativeBoard

Illinois Legislative Director Robert W. Guy said the move was made in order to make union announcements, alerts and breaking news stories available to members as quickly and as widely as possible.

“For several years now the Board has been using the ‘Rapid Response’ feature on our Web site to blitz late-breaking news stories and action alerts to members,” he said. “Since Facebook offers even greater speed and has become increasingly popular with our members, we decided to make the same information available over the social network to assure wider distribution. As organizations of all types are quickly learning, Facebook is a very powerful tool.”

Guy said the Facebook page would supplement—not replace—the Board’s other information resources.

“Our Web site and all its departments and listings will remain in place without alterations,” he said.

Guy said younger members who use Facebook frequently are the ones most likely to use the Board’s new Facebook page.

“The benefits of being able to inform our members of important and timely information is obvious”, Guy said. “But with it comes some caution and responsibility: No one should be accessing Facebook or utilizing an electronic device while on duty.

“Members who wish to join our growing list of followers can “Like” our new page to start receiving timely news and information as it’s posted”, Guy said. “It’s like Rapid Response, only quicker!”
