SPRINGFIELD (May 5)—House Bill 1573 has been approved unanimously by the Senate Transportation Committee.

The measure, introduced on behalf of the UTU Feb. 15, mandates that all contract-carrier vehicles that transport railroad crews must have a readily available first-aid kit on board.

UTU Illinois Legislative Director Robert W. Guy said that members will be alerted when the bill is scheduled for a vote by the full Senate.

“At that time we will ask our members to contact their senators and ask that they vote ‘yes’ on this workplace-safety legislation,” Guy said. “Direct appeals from our members historically have been the most important factor in getting safety legislation passed.”
