CHICAGO (Jan. 9)–The Chicago Federation of Labor (CFL) has announced it is accepting applications for the 2015 round of its William A. Lee Memorial Scholarship program.

The Lee Scholarships, valued at $2,000 each, are open only to members, or the children of members, of a CFL-affiliated labor union. Applicants also must be high-school seniors scheduled to graduate in spring 2015.

“I urge any SMART-TD member in the Chicago area with a child in the senior year of high school to consider a Lee Scholarship as a way to help pay for the graduate’s college education,” said SMART-TD Illinois Legislative Director Robert W. Guy. “Every survey and study ever conducted has shown that education is the single most important element in career advancement and social mobility. It truly is the key to the American dream.”

The Lee Scholarships come in two forms. Applicants may enter an academic competition in which five scholarships are awarded to those with the highest scores, or a lottery in which awards for another five scholarships are based on a random drawing.

Details of the application process can be found at www.chicagolabor.org/union-resources/scholarship-information. Applications must be submitted by March 2, 2015.

“College is expensive, but a Lee Scholarship award can lighten the burden for working families with a child seeking a higher education,” Guy said. “If you are sending a child off to college, apply for one of these scholarships now.
